First 2 Months of housemanship

Week 7 as Houseman

So I decided to write a little bit to share my experiences these past 7 weeks working as  a houseman in Penang. Many months before housemanship, I would read as many articles/blogs/posts on housemanship life to try and get idea of what it would be like and prepare to make it an easier transition. It didn't really help actually, but anyway I will try my best to share what i can XD

I chose a hospital on mainland because it's relatively close to my house making it easier for me for accomodation, food etc. Hospital GH Penang would have been a closer option but based on friends and seniors advice mainland seemed like a better option for less workload and better environment. I was so wrong hahaha

I started off with medical, agreed to be the busiest department in the hospital. Usually on weekdays the workload is very heavy, sometimes we have to be at the ward by 5am to make sure we review, trace investigations and know our cases by the time our MO's arrive. The first few weeks of this was extremely tough. Mostly because i didnt know how everything works, from reviewing patients, how to write and record the case notes, carrying out plans, and filling out a thousand different forms.

Despite all this, i'm extremely thankful to have been given great seniors who were willing to guide me through this adapting period. Through the hectic day they still found moments to slowly guide a newcomer to do basic things. Also most of the MO's and specialists are very kind and willing to teach just as long as we take the initiative to learn.

I think it's important when starting, just to pick up as many things as you can and keep on asking questions when you face uncertainty. In the first month, everyday i would encounter new things and carry out new procedures. I would ask my seniors, nurses and last resort MO's whenever i was in doubt. At first it was very overwhelming because there is just so much. i felt that i would never be able to pickup everything and was very unconfident. But slowly i realised it got easier and smoother.   It's just a matter of time and you will surely be able to do it. I still keep reminding that to myself everday because sometimes progress is slow. Slowly but surely , I hold on to that

  1. Thank you for sharing your experience. I was wondering if it is true that there is a high extension rate in Hospital Seberang Jaya?

    1. You may be well into your housemanship by now, but to answer your question, no the extension rates are not high. just make sure you pass your end of posting assessments
